Deteriorated or Unreadable Media

There is no conversion charge if we cannot recover any data due to deteriorated or unreadable media. However, depending on the type of media, we may have to put in a fair amount of investigation, time and effort only to eventually find out that the data cannot be recovered. So an investigation charge applies in such cases as follows: • Disks (all types): $10 per disk • DC6250, DC6550 (or equivalents): $50 per cartridge • DC300, DC600, DC1000, DC2000, DC6150 (or equivalents): $75 per cartridge • DLT, LTO: $65 per cartridge • 9-track tapes: $45 per tape • All other tapes or cartridges: $50 each In such cases, we will let you know the result of our investigation, i.e., what was the problem with the media. This charge also applies if you have us investigate your media and then decide not to proceed.

Media Repair

We find that the elastic belts in most tape cartridges from 1970’s and 1980’s (DC300XL, DC600, DC1000, DC2000, DC6150, DC6250, DC6550) have age-deteriorated to the point where the tape cannot be read without replacing the belts. This requires us to open up the cartridge, carefully replace and re-thread the belt to do the conversion, and if possible put your original belt back when done. Sometimes additional cleaning and repair is also needed. Depending on the type and condition of the cartridge, there may be an additional charge of $75 to $150 per cartridge if such services are required.

File Translation

The cost to translate the file format of your data from an old application to a newer one (e.g., convert documents created in WordStar to Microsoft Word) is $1 per file translated. This charge does not apply if you only want the untranslated files as read from the original media.

There is no charge for this destination media. Quantity discounts apply if you have several disks or tapes to be converted.

Floppy Disks and other Disks

Deteriorated or Unreadable Media

There is no conversion charge if we cannot recover any data due to deteriorated or unreadable media. However, depending on the type of media, we may have to put in a fair amount of investigation, time and effort only to eventually find out that the data cannot be recovered. So an investigation charge applies in such cases as follows: • Disks (all types): $10 per disk • DC6250, DC6550 (or equivalents): $50 per cartridge • DC300, DC600, DC1000, DC2000, DC6150 (or equivalents): $75 per cartridge • DLT, LTO: $65 per cartridge • 9-track tapes: $45 per tape • All other tapes or cartridges: $50 each In such cases, we will let you know the result of our investigation, i.e., what was the problem with the media. This charge also applies if you have us investigate your media and then decide not to proceed.

Media Repair

We find that the elastic belts in most tape cartridges from 1970’s and 1980’s (DC300XL, DC600, DC1000, DC2000, DC6150, DC6250, DC6550) have age-deteriorated to the point where the tape cannot be read without replacing the belts. This requires us to open up the cartridge, carefully replace and re-thread the belt to do the conversion, and if possible put your original belt back when done. Sometimes additional cleaning and repair is also needed. Depending on the type and condition of the cartridge, there may be an additional charge of $75 to $150 per cartridge if such services are required.

File Translation

The cost to translate the file format of your data from an old application to a newer one (e.g., convert documents created in WordStar to Microsoft Word) is $1 per file translated. This charge does not apply if you only want the untranslated files as read from the original media.

Return Shipping and Handling

Return shipping/handling cost within the U.S. is 14.50 by USPS First Class Mail, or $49.50 by Fedex. International shipping costs more. This cost does not apply if we email you the converted files (total 2MB or less) and you don’t want your original media back.

Discounts are available at media quantity 5 or more, if the total cost (excluding shipping and tax) exceeds $250. Please contact us for details.
